ECO Adventures

ECO Place-based Units are modeled after the proven, hands-on lessons our educators deliver in classrooms and schoolyards during the school day.

They are classroom-ready and built for use by instructors of all kinds. They come complete with everything needed to present our modules and assess student learning. Our comprehensive, grade appropriate units make it easy to teach ecological concepts and integrate the learning across math, English language arts, social studies, and art.

PLANT ID

4th Grade Unit

60-80 min Lesson

This unit includes lessons that allow students to dive into the world of botany. Botany (the study of plants) is a great way for students to view the natural world around them by providing the necessary tools to understand how plants are identified. In each hands-on activity, students will learn the names and distinguishing characteristics of many common plants found in the Pacific Northwest, so the next time they are exploring the outdoors students can share their knowledge with friends and family. Extension lessons offer multiple ways to become familiar with plants, including finding symmetry in leaves, conducting research on ethnobotany, and using the power of the sun to make beautiful leaf art.

What Materials are Included in this Lesson?
  • Complete teacher guide
  • Google slideshow
  • Virtual activity
  • Vocabulary Cards
  • Dichotomous Key Worksheet
  • Leaf Characteristics Worksheet
  • Research Rubric

Your Questions Answered

Beginning with the Wetland Food Web activity from ECO’s early days, the idea to build a successful ECO lesson into a full kit with extension lessons has been years in the making. Now, ECO has developed 12 Place-Based Units (PBUs) that focus on the flora and fauna of the Pacific Northwest, intended to strengthen teachers’ confidence in teaching science, while increasing the amount of time K-5 students spend building ecological and overall scientific literacy.

What’s included:
  • An educational ECO Adventures film that teaches students important science content
  • A printed and bound teacher guide with background information and lesson procedures
  • A hands-on science activity aligned to Next Generation Science Standards (examples: Old Bird card game, Wetland Food Web tiles, Pollinators costume pieces, laminated Plant ID plant samples)
  • A virtual version of the science activity for distance learning
  • Pre and post lesson student surveys to assess learning outcomes
  • Extension lessons in math, English Language Arts, art, and social studies and their accompanying hands-on materials, including grade-level appropriate books
  • Printed vocabulary cards and student worksheets
  • Evaluation based on the 6 P’s Critical Orientations for Indigenous Studies Curriculum
  • A USB drive on a customized ECO lanyard with all the above content pre-uploaded
How to use PBUs:

PBUs are versatile beyond classroom implementation. They can be used to pre-teach content before an ECO schoolyard exploration or field trip, or as a way to reflect on the learning outcomes post-trip. They can accompany content taught by a partner organization or land management agency, such as the Oregon State Parks rangers. Outdoor Schools may use PBUs as additions to field studies curriculum. Parents may choose to access virtual activities to use with students while learning remotely, or purchase hands-on activity components as a way to bring educational activities into the home. The opportunities are endless!

How to access PBUs:

PBUs are delivered to classroom teachers and/or partner organizations as physical kits and have accompanying digital content available through membership-locked webpages. In this way, PBUs can only be accessed by teachers, parents, or partners who have purchased the unit or have had units funded through grants or donations. Teachers in Title I schools will always receive access free of charge. Teachers will have unlimited ability to contact ECO staff for questions, training, support, and material restocking when needed. With the exception of art supplies and other consumables, materials are able to be reused year after year.

Field Experiences

Engaging students outdoors has countless benefits. Whether students journey into the outdoors on a field trip or simply go outside to investigate their schoolyards, field experiences allow students to see and apply what they learned during their ECO classroom lessons. ECO’s team of experienced outdoor educators help plan and lead field experiences tailored to the specific site and learning goals of each classroom.

Plants & Fungi

The Pacific Northwest is filled with organisms big and small, from the tallest trees of the temperate rainforest to the mysterious mats of mycorrhizal fungi below the surface of the soil. Learn about plant properties, the importance of plants, and how to identify plants and fungi that are common to your area!
